Calorie Killers was formed from a group of men who were going to a slimming for men only session held at a local church on the Braunstone Estate in Leicester. Dwindling numbers of people attending the slimming session forced the group to disband due to the running costs.
As the remaining group of men still wanted to meet it was decided to have a meeting inviting everyone who used to attend the slimming group as well as anyone who would be interested. The meeting was arranged for February 2004 and a group of around a dozen people attended, we had an idea what the new club should be about which was to involve exercise with nutritional advice and for men only. After some debate someone came up with the name for the new club - Calorie Killers - which we all thought summed up what we were trying to do through eating healthily and exercising.
Since those early days the club has grown to around 60 members with ages ranging from around 16 to 83 years old. The club is run by a committee of around 12 members who meet monthly to discuss policy, events, etc.
The healthy eating side of the club is designed to help all members with problems they may have with dietary needs, we don’t advocate a general slimming plan but through our nutritionist a healthy eating plan is constructed for an individual member if requested as we realise each person may have different needs.
The group meet each Wednesday night and do sporting activities for 45 minutes, after the sports session we have an arrangement with Sandyhurst Residential Home to use their kitchen for the nutritional part of the meeting, this involves a club member going shopping with our nutritionist and then prepares a taster for the other members after the sporting activities.
The success of Calorie Killers in Braunstone inspired a decision to create a second group in another area of the city. Calorie Killers felt that the Braunstone group had made such an impact over the previous 18 months it was time to reach out to more men who needed a lifestyle change. It was decided that the new group should be in an area close to Braunstone so it was accessible to the existing members of Calorie Killers and to offer other men a chance to join Calorie Killers. With the support of the Fit Active Buddies, Sure Start and Leicester City Council the new Calorie Killers group was set up on the 11 May 2006 in New Parks, which is situated next to Braunstone in the west of Leicester.
